WASHINGTON - Georgetown fans enjoying the Homecoming festivities on the Hilltop this weekend will be treated excitement beyond the Hoyas No. 12 men's soccer team taking on Creighton at 1 p.m. and football hosting Princeton at 2 p.m. On Saturday, the Georgetown University Athletics Department will unveil its new-look Jack the Bulldog mascot.

Since 1977, when J. Patrick Sheehan debuted as the first Jack the Bulldog mascot, fans have witnessed six different costume designs, with Saturday's re-introduction, serving as the seventh unique look for Jack. The new look - expected to be the most kid-friendly design - was made possible by a contribution from Georgetown alums Barbara and Tom Napolitano, who aided a team of designers, with input from both current and former students to wear the costume.

For many years the Napolitano's have followed the various iterations of the Jack the Bulldog costume and were keenly interested in helping Georgetown to purchase and design the next generation of the mascot - one that would be appealing to children of all ages.

While some Hoyas' fans may remember the January 12, 2008 game against Connecticut for Roy Hibbert's game-winning three-pointer with five seconds remaining, it will also be remembered by a small few, as the debut of the Hoyas most fierce mascot by Paul Biedlingmaier (Col. '11).

"I remember it was the UCONN game, our first BIG EAST game of our 2007-08 season," Biedlingmaier remembers. "He was definitely a scarier, fiercer dog, compared to the other Jack designs that we've had. Sometimes people were a little more scared of Jack, so I would have to counter by pretending to be afraid of them, to get them to laugh about it and get on the same page."

The Jack the Bulldog mascot may become a friendlier and more-welcoming sight with a new design, but it will still retain many of the signature aspects that fans have grown to love through the years. Jack will feature the same blue and gray striped beanie with the "G" logo in the center. The kindly Jack will also feature a similar spiked collar and gray coloring. However, the new Jack will feature a cartoonier look, closer to the face of the Georgetown Kids' Club logo.

"In working with the designers, we took the two previous mascots that they produced, as well as looked at our current bulldog seal and our kids' club logo to merge them into a friendly face that will continue the legacy of the Jack the Bulldog mascot," said Senior Director of Marketing Pete Kirschner. "I think the designers and our current and former mascots did a great job in capturing the kid friendly appeal of Jack."
