How to Pick the Comfiest Wedding Shoes

One of the reasons for which I will forever be grateful to my maid of honor: At the reception, she made me sit down, take off my shoes, and eat something. Meanwhile, she formed a one-woman human barricade next to me for about five minutes so that I had a forced period of rest. I didn't realize how much I actually needed until it happened—talk about getting a second wind.

This is all to say that, at your wedding, you're going to be talking to a lot of people—everyone, as a matter of fact—and you will be on your feet. A lot. Some brides slip off the fancy shoes and slip on comfy tennies or ballet flats, post-wedding (or even pre-wedding), but even then, your feet may start to feel way achier or more tired than you ever suspected. So you owe it to yourself to make your shoes as comfortable as possible from the outset, right?



If you pick high heels...your entire body weight gets shifted forward—which means lots of pressure at the front of your feet. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, you should aim for a heel that's no more than two inches high, which helps keep your weight more balanced.

Always consider the material. Vinyl or plastic shoes have a tendency to pinch and rub in the places you don't want either to happen. They don't breathe and they don't bend. After a few hours, you'll have wished for something with some stretch!

Look at the sole. Flexible soles let your toes bend naturally, and a cushioned heel helps keep your foot in place.

Adding inserts doesn't mean that you're old...it means you're smart! They can help cushion every part of your foot, making your day a lot more comfy. And no one will even know they're there.



Don't try to "break in" your shoes. This really never works. Your shoes should feel good the second you try them on.

And speaking of trying them on...don't go shoe shopping until the end of the day. That's when your feet will be most swollen (sexy!), so you'll have a truer fit—especially if your wedding is taking place in the afternoon or evening, because they'll probably be the same on the day of.
