Cosplay: Participants try to capture 'magical feeling' by becoming favorite character

Inside Sherrod Library on the campus of East Tennessee State University, Jessica Bowman was laying out her supplies.

Golden 80cm Neon Genesis EVA Asuka Anime Nylon Cosplay Wig

In a little under an hour, she will no longer be Jessica Bowman, biology student,  but Sailor Venus, an anime character from the show Sailor Moon. Anime is short for Japanese animation.

Pink 35cm Fairy Tail-Natsu Dragneel Nylon Cosplay Wig

A blond Cosplay Wigs uk, bright orange dress, blue bow, a bag containing other supplies and a make-up bag were placed on a table inside a group study room. She unzipped one of the bags and pulled out a hair net.
“You have to make sure to get all of your hair,” she said. “If you have any of your natural hair sticking out from under the Cosplay Wigs uk, it doesn’t look right.”
After a few minutes, she gets all of her hair inside the hair net. She then sits down and starts the transformation process.

She starts  by applying concealer around her face. She said anime characters have flawless skin, so she needs to have flawless skin too.
Bowman is part of a movement that has been taking place across the country called cheap cosplay costumes uk.
Cheap cosplay costumes uk is short for costume play acting. It involves people dressing up in costume and becoming a character. It's different from  Halloween though because  when people cheap cosplay costumes uk, they try to become the character and emulate their personality, even if it's very different from their own.

THE SECRETS BEHIND OTAKON’S BEST COSTUMES

For now at least, Baltimore is host to Otakon, one of the most extensive cosplay fests in the world. I hit the Baltimore Convention Center this weekend to scour the scene for secrets of Otakon cheap costumes uk making. Clad in a yellow spandex two peice bodysuit, styrofoam hat, and fingers dawned with hot glue gun burns (see pics of me and LOTS others in City Paper‘s Otakon photo gallery), I didn’t have to do too much coaxing to get people to spill the beans on their inventive techniques for creating their personalized hommage to East Asian pop culture. From strict die hard character replications to the “‘I’m hangin’ out in my wildest duds enjoying myself” ensembles, I was able to small talk with enough peeps to cultivate a new bag of tricks of my own.

Red 60cm When They Cry 3-Umineko no Naku Koro ni-Ange Beatrice Nylon Cosplay Wig

At Otakon, the scope was endless, but there were some consistencies. Gender was of little concern. The gender challengers ranged roughly from dudes in loud tutus to girls in stern military fashion ready to stealthily kick your ass without you even knowing it. I admit, when it comes to knowing who these seemingly hundreds of characters are, I’ve got some homework to do.

The Qwaser Of Stigmata Elizabeth 35cm Cosplay Wig

An observant novice like me would surely notice a reoccurring industrial-style ninja theme. One kind warrior shared his technique in constructing a breast plate with sculpted styrofoam (my fave). I was getting the feeling that few protective gear would be complete without silver bolts, and this gentleman simply embellished his black armor with silver thumbtacks. Simple and reality defying, for I would have never known without asking.

Blue 60cm CLANNAD-ICHINOSE KOTOMI Nylon Cosplay Wig

Another graceful ninja star, garnished her armor with bolts as well – but this time with variation of size. When asked how these bolts were fabricated, her answer was impressive: googly eyes painted silver. Genius?

I ascended the packed escalator to find a mind blowing cheap costumes uk by Abisola Fatodu perched at the top. Not more than 15, in my eyes Abisola is a hard working couture savant. Her version of Toothiana, Queen of the Tooth Fairies from Rise of the Guardians, took neon feathers in a direction my eyes have not seen in real life. She described her feather embellishment technique as “all hand hot-glued.” Gotta love it. But ouch, my wounded fingers throb at the thought. She’s got some serious dilligence to make this head to toe blue, green and yellow standout. The masterful headpeice blended seamlessly towards a face of thoughtfully executed make-up. Kudos to Abisola!

Right around the corner was a smashingly fabu example of peeps bringing their own flair to the party. Baltimore’s own Ms. Grey. We locked eyes and that was it. Instant friends. Totally not mimicking any specific character, but holding her own veracious grip in a neon tripped out 80′s print spandex celebration of life! She took this stretch phenomenon to a whole new level by topping it off with a hand made Cosplay Wigs uk fashioned of randomly colored nylon tubing. Graciously sharing her technique of sewing the tubing onto a wig cap made Ms. Grey that much cooler. She added beads to the end of each tube, creating a look that was tight! After a good chunk of my morning scouring Etsy and Ebay to find a Cosplay Wigs uk of these materials remotely as chic- my efforts were to no avail.

From there, I mingled with Otakon participants and (lightly) shook my thing on the dancefloor at the rave party. Eventually we found ourselves drifting towards the outdoor delight of a mild August evening. As the harbor beckoned us closer, we came to understand that one of the coolest things about Otakon is that it takes place in Baltimore.

Upon our exit, it was hard to deter the proposal of “Free Hugs and Kisses” given by John and Zoey of Richmond Virginia. Their costume-making technique required nothing more than black signs with bright white lettering- but sincerity of the delivery shined as brightly as a thousand neon glowsticks. They were happy to come to Baltimore and share their dreams, ideas, and affection, as so many observers of the Otakon tradition are. And for that, I thank you all.

Otakon 2013 Diary: One fan’s view

Saturday at Otakon was much of the same, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

SOUL EATER Medusa Cosplay Wig

I wore the same costumes I wore on Friday — I tend to do costume changes at conventions once one costume becomes too uncomfortable to wear. I started out with Utena from Revolutionary Girl Utena. It’s a show from the late 1990′s about a girl who wants to become a prince after being so impressed by one during her childhood. The show has a lot of underlying themes to it, like dealing with adolescence and the loss of innocence. Visually it’s stunning, and Utena is a fantastic protagonist, which is why I chose her as a character to emulate. The problem is, she’s got long pink hair, and I do not, which necessitates a wig.

Naruto Sasori Cosplay Wig

Wigs are easy to get but can be difficult to maintain. I’ve got shoulder-length hair, and I do not envy anyone who decides to go longer. Obviously, the fact that it’s plastic fibers has an effect on that; it tangles easily, it’s a pain to straighten out, and it’s no fun to wash. But I deal with it. I changed midday simply because the wig became so hot, and because wearing a black jacket in Baltimore in August isn’t a fantastic idea.

Green 60cm Starry☆Sky-Hoshizuki Kotarō Nylon Cosplay Wig

I spent a lot of time on Saturday simply bumming around the convention, meeting new people and checking out panels. Nothing too memorable panel-wise, but those can be pretty hit-or-miss. Even if a topic seems interesting, if the people running it aren’t good at public speaking, the whole thing can become an embarrassing disaster pretty quickly. I’ve been on panels in the past, discussing games or shows that I like in detail, but usually with other people, which takes the pressure off (and makes the whole process more fun).

I went back to that artist’s alley booth and picked up one of those Nintendo cartridge clocks. I had decided on the original “Legend of Zelda,” but by the time I went back, those had sold out. I ended up settling for “Zelda II: The Adventure of Link,” which is not exactly fondly remembered by fans of the series. I enjoyed it, though, if for no other reason than it introduced a lot of great musical themes that have persisted in the games since then. The ladies running the booth said that they are actual, genuine Nintendo cartridges that have been donated to them because they no longer worked as games. They also take busted controllers and turn them into wallets. It’s a pretty cute way to recycle such iconic video gaming items.

I also picked up a blind box trading figure from a series of games I’m a fan of called Touhou Project. The issue with these kind of figures is that they are indeed blind boxes — you don’t know what you’re going to get. Most sets have photos of what’s in the set, somewhere between six to 12 different figures, and when you pick a box it could be any one of them. I had already ranked which figures I wanted from most to least in my head, and went ahead and purchased a box. Of course, since this is my luck we’re talking about, I got the one I really didn’t want at all. Thankfully, the people I’m rooming with are also into Touhou Project, and one was willing to purchase it from me for what I had originally paid for it. No loss there, thankfully.

Speaking of the people I’m rooming with… we had arranged an annual convention dinner with a lot of our friends. The people at Edo Sushi at Harborplace have been very accommodating in the past, and were willing to rent a room to us this year. When you accidentally bring close to 50 people to a restaurant — together — unannounced, they’ll do that. (Apparently, that’s what happened last year — I missed last year’s convention due to work conflicts.)

The rest of the evening was spent packing, since check-out on Sunday is going to be a predictable mess, given that a vast majority of the people staying here are going to be checking out at the same time.

Here’s hoping things go well.

Cosplay Is Creative, Not Crazy: An Open Letter to the New York Post

Yesterday's New York Post review of upcoming SyFy reality show, Heroes of Cosplay costumes uk, angered quite a few of us in the geek community. The article portrays the cosplay community as "confused" and "weird," all while looking down its nose at those who might enjoy the creative pursuit.
Yes, cosplay is insanely time-consuming. Yes, cosplay shoes uk is expensive. Yes, cosplay represents a subset of fandom that not everyone is into, and that can be jarring to an outsider. I haven't seen Heroes of Cosplay; maybe it wrongly portrays the subculture. But it's your job as a journalist to educate yourself about your subject matter before jumping to conclusions based on a reality TV show. Cosplayers shouldn't be scoffed at, lumped in with "nutty Civil War re-enactors," because you were too cool for school to inform yourself an extra smidge about the industry.

Dragon Ball Kame Hame Practising Clothing Cosplay Costume

We here at Cultist love ourselves some Cosplay Wigs uk, so we felt we needed to set the record straight, just in time for any future cosplay articles and reviews you might try to run.

Dragon Ball Vegeta Battle Dress Uniform Cloth Combined Leather Cosplay Costume

1. Cosplayers come from all walks of life, from full-time employees to students.
No need to wonder anymore "what these folks do to earn a living"; anyone from your dentist to that adjunct professor/freelance writer over there (cough) can be a potential cosplayer. I spoke with one Miami-area cosplayer, Jonathan Stryker, who is a marketing personal assistant for an author, videographer, and photographer but manages to find time for his favorite hobby. Another cosplayer, Alexa, happens to be a full-time writer for gaming journalism juggernaut Polygon. Ryan, a Miami lawyer, attended his first ever con (Florida Supercon 2012) in full Doctor Who regalia, fez and all.

Black Butler Grell Sutcliff Cosplay Costume

2. Cosplay can range from store-bought pieces with handmade accents to full-fledge custom creations.
Stryker's effort here took about $1000 bucks and countless hours.

Jonathan Stryker
This cosplay is NOT to be trifled with.
This writer's Game of Thrones-inspired get-up, on the other hand, took a just a couple of days. I bought the dress, and made everything else--only half that hair is actually mine.

Elisa Meléndez
The night is dark and full of hot glue guns.
Sure, some people will spend a ton of money on construction or commissioning custom creations. Many others are just starting out and don't necessarily abide by hard and fast rules regarding construction. They just want to express their love for these characters and show off some artistic skill. Which brings me to my next point

Syfy looks at world of make-believe reality in 'Heroes of Cosplay'

I’m so confused—or maybe they are.
In case you don’t know, (and I sure didn’t), there are hundreds of thousands of people around the world who spend millions upon millions of dollars on intricately constructed costumes for their personal use.
No — not just gowns or nutty Civil War costumes that people wear for reenactments. Nor is it the job description of the costume designer at a local theater group.
That’s all mere child’s play, or should I say, “cosplay shoes uk” compared to real thing — Cosplay Wigs uk. What the hell is that?
It’s competitive costume-making and costume-wearing at comic conventions — events at which competitors spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours on outfits to look like characters in animated movies, comic books, graphic novels and video games.
Cosplay UK

HERO WORSHIP: Yaya Han, who’s known for her elaborate costumes that she creates herself, is the biggest celebrity in the world of cosplay. She’s featured in Syfy’s upcoming series, “Heroes of Cosplay.”
It’s not enough to go to a costume store and rent a Demon Hunter outfit? I mean, seriously. Renting is so last decade!

Cool Black Acrylic Pirate Costume

Syfy, which loves all things comic, cosmic and cheap costumes uk has a new series, “Heroes of Cosplay,” devoted to these very folks who are devoted to competing around the country at comic conventions.
Competitive cosplayers make giant molds, sew elaborate outer space outfits, spray-paint their bodies and create armor from plastic molds they build themselves.
We learn that if the cosplay industry has a legend, it’s the one-and-only Yaya Han — a woman who is such a remarkable designer/wearer of the wild, hugely expensive costumes she and her boyfriend create that she’s now the go-to authority.
She is, in fact, a cosplay mogul with lines of accessories and God knows what else. Then there are the competitors themselves, some fairly new to cosplay and some who’ve been doing it years.
We aren’t given any in-depth knowledge about what these folks do to earn a living in the real world that enables them to spend every waking hour and dime on making costumes. Several of them seem to be involved in the industry.
No one seems rich, but there are big cash prizes for winners, which helps defer the cost of the elaborate costumes.
The weird thing, (well, all of it is weird), is that these folks really want to be the fictional characters they portray.
If you like cosplay yourself, you’ll love “Cosplay.”

Cosplay is an Art Form

Cosplay costumes uk is much more than your average Halloween costume - it's the act of doing your best to become a character for a day. Or three. It's the ultimate expression of nerd love for characters from anime, comics, or video games, and it should be regarded as an art form.
Cosplay is picking a character, drafting and planning their costume, finding the perfect materials, constructing them just-so, recreating armor out of foam and whatever that was from your basement, making jewelry, styling wigs, working with wood, metal, PVC pipe, and who knows what to make that fantasy prop come alive.

35cm Axis Powers Hetalia Feliciano Vargas Cosplay Wig

Cosplay Wigs uk is seam ripping a skirt five times in a row, promising to exercise to get that unreal body type but succumbing to ice cream and anime instead. Cosplay is cutting your hair because you're too broke to get a wig, despairing over how perfect another cosplayer did your character and over how very many others seem to be cosplaying your character too but deciding - to hell with it! - you're going to make that costume anyway and wear it well regardless of everyone else.
Cosplay is grinning idiotically as you post progress pictures and show everyone, including yourself, how far you've come, not because you want attention but because you want to and deserve to feel proud of the work you've done so far.
Outside of fandom, cosplay can be misinterpreted as fan service or showing body parts for attention, but it's much more than that. Cosplay is more than modelling, more than acting or posing for a photo.
As a cosplayer, you pour your heart and soul into an outfit and put that outfit and your heart out into the world for everyone to see. You put yourself on display and say, "THIS is who I really am. I made this myself and I am AWESOME," despite what you are saying to yourself all the while.

Black And White Satin Gothic Lolita Dress

Dark Phoenix cosplayer poses at Long Beach Comic Con 2012. Photo by Flickr user richcz3
As cosplayers, we are artists who use our faces as our open canvas, who fall asleep at stupid o'clock over our sewing machines and wake up covered in thread and desperation because the Con is in four hours. We dive into our own world, created with foam and acrylic paint and dreams come true, and paint that world for others, if even for a few hours.
It's time that lolita cosplay uk was allotted the same respect that any other artist gets instead of constant criticism of "you shouldn't cosplay because you're ____." I guarantee you'd be less willing to tell an artist they shouldn't sculpt or paint or write because they're too skinny or too fat for your ignorant eyes, but for some reason, it's acceptable to insult a cosplayer, who's put their core being out for the world to see, for not looking similar enough to an unrealistic anime character.
And that includes those cosplays that show more skin. Defying gravity is no easy task, but cosplayers make it work - and yet, those cosplayers are the subject of derision because they showed a bit more thigh than socially acceptable in their quest for accuracy. After all, accurately replicating a video game character with DD size boobs and short shorts reflects a cosplayer's promiscuous personal life in the eyes of many. Judging an artist based on the nature of their art is in poor taste - just because an artist might draw naked people one day for practice shouldn't reflect at all on their personal life decisions and the same is true for cosplayers.
As one photographer sets out to prove, cosplay is the art of self-expression. We are artwork. It's time we were treated as such.

Cosplay Ideas for Families and Groups

Sleeping Beauty cosplayers
Lovely group of Sleeping Beauty cosplayers.

A family of Horrible-ness
The ages of the characters and cosplayers don't have to match. Look at how adorable a tiny Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer are!
Conventions are a great place to meet up with friends and dressing up can make it even more fun!  Attending a convention can also make a memorable family vacation, but finding costumes that work for friends and relatives of different ages can be challenging.
Most group costumes uk can easily be expanded or reduced to accommodate the size of your group while still feeling complete.  For example, cosplayers with a Wizard of Oz theme could work with the four main characters (Dorothy, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Tin Man) or the group could be expanded to include Toto, the Wicked Witch, Glinda, and as many flying monkeys or munchkins as needed.  You can also group together characters from different worlds with a theme, such as horror movie killers (Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Jigsaw, Leatherface) or famous vampires (Dracula, Spike, Edward Cullen).
Below are a few ideas to get you started thinking about group costumes for friends or families.

What Make Your Flower Girls?

White Sleeveless Satin Flower Girl Dress

Flower girls can also be called little maids of honor. Normally, they should be the ones who
hold the train of the brides behind the brides or the ones who walk before the bride and
groom and drip the drops of the flowers. They are girls around the age of four to five. In
some places, the boys around the age of 5 to 6 can also be little maids of honor and the
moral to do so is to have babies in an earlier time.
According to the literary quotation from Christianity, flower girls stand for little angels.
They come with blessings and happiness to the brides. Lovely flower girls are the symbol
of the sweet love between the couple. It indicates that they can have more children. At the
same time, the flower girls add a sense of smart to the ceremony.
Flower girls are the symbol of angels so that they can confuse devils. When they start to
drop the flowers on the couple and send their best wishes, the couple receives a happy life.
Besides, in the western, it requires the flower girls to hold ring in hand. When they lead the
road for the couple, the sound of the ring helps disperse the devils and ghosts.
Then what should the flower girls do? What are their responsibilities?

White A-line Square Satin Floor Length Flower Girl Dress

1. Toss the rose petals
When the wedding ceremony begins and the sound of wedding March starts, it is the time
that the flower girls appear dressing in a lovely dress at the head of the team and toss the
petals along the red carpet.
If the wedding dress uk of the bride has a long tail, the little boy need to hold the train in case
the bride falls down and it is the flower girls responsibility to toss the petals.
2. Hand over the rings
In the part of exchanging the rings, if the rings are handed over by lovely flower girls
instead of an adult, won’t it be more romantic?
Now let’s talk about the decorations for the flower girls dresses.
Generally, we can choose the fresh flower which has a big inflorescence. That could be eye
catching and mainly we would like to pick rose considering the bright color it shows. The
other reason is that, roses are used in almost every wedding and most of the time; it could
not be fully used.
Also, the back part of the flower girl dresses can be added with some exquisite lovely
decorations like angel wings, butterfly wings, bee wings. If you think it would be too
inconvenient, a big bow is enough.
If the dress is in simple design, exaggerate big bow can make the whole dress vivid. Or, it
would make the dress seems to be too gaudy.

Choosing Your Right own Type in Lolita Fashion

Lolita has become an interesting fashion in the young group. With Lolita fashion’s population in the world, more and more Lolita types are accepted by lolis. But it is hard for newbie to choosing their perfect Lolita clothing. I often heard the question goes like this: somebody help me to choosing the right type Lolita dress? Am I a “real” Lolita if I only like Punk Lolita? Do I have to choose only one style and stick with it forever? I am little plump and is the sweet lolita dress uk fit me? Is that OK for me to wear a Gothic Lolita Dress uk and the Lolita boots that I got from online shop?
Here are some advices for you to choosing the right type Lolita clothing:

Cotton Puple Ruffles Sleeveless Classic Lolita Dress

1 There is no rules said you could not wear any or all of the styles to your heart content. It means that you could wear mash up for what you like. But do aware the basic color scheme. It goes like if you buy another pink skirt, you have all the same components to put into your outfit. You do not have to run out and get anything new to match it.

Wonderful Black Knitted Mesh Bow Sash Short Sleeve Classic Lolita Dress

2 For those girls that looks a little plump. If you are happy with your jugs and do not mind dressing up as an elegant doll, try the sweet lolita dress uk and Gothic Lolita Dress uk. They have the best curves to cover your redundant body. But when you choosing the Lolita dresses from the on line shops, do ask their customer service if you are not sure with measurement.

3 The mash up for Lolita is not popular now, but you could match each others with the color or lace type. For new comers of the loli style, no matter what kind, the biggest warning is also the most logical… It’s treated as any other subculture, weird. People will treat you differently than if you where dressed in a plain T & jeans, responses are good & bad; but remember to stay true to who you are & not give in to any pressure to change.
